Things I Learned This Semester

Tomorrow is the last day of classes.  The last day I will be in school with my dear friends who are going abroad next semester.  The last day I will be a classmate of friends who are graduating and moving away.

I re-read the above paragraph, and it sounds sad, but it's not.  It's been a great ride, and for me it's not quite over.  I am ready to get home for break - and 100% comfortable that the people who I should theoretically be crying "I'll never see you again!!!!" - that I will see 'em again, because We Are Georgetown and it just works out that way.

It's been one heck of a semester.  So here is what I learned:

1.  I learned what it feels like to go to school healthy.  It feels damn good.

2.  I learned that what I want out of GU is very different from what other people want.  The campus tours all say "work hard, play hard."  But I got here and realized that the people who work hard and the people who play hard are two different groups of people.  This semester, I really worked on striking a balance, and oh, has it been rewarding.

3.  I learned that some of my friends are really strange and like to make a meat baby and have a celebration for it in Red Square.  I just saw it and it is exactly as weird as you think.  Another friend told me it's for the class "The Spectacle of Eating."  I am kind of jealous of people who can make shapes out of meat and parade it through campus for class credit.  But...

4.  ...I learned that I love my major.  I got to do theology/art history, health and development, marriage and development, demography of the EU, and cultural diplomacy.  Or:  Why aren't we polygamist?  Here are some pretty pictures about God.  Now let's talk about Europe.  And the developing world.  And how culture spreads.  I'm probably gonna be really boring at cocktail parties now but DANG I really liked these classes.

5.  I learned that yes, I can balance school with a job.  I like my job.  I like the people at my job.  I like meeting new people and making name tags.  They say I work in Exec Ed Custom Programs but I feel like a Camp Counselor for Wonks and I like it.

6.  I learned that the SBH ought to be a historical landmark.  The rave.  The beard.  The blacklight.  The field trip to a highly questionable hot tub that I am so glad I was just a spectator for.

7.  I learned that a life without a meal plan = GOOD.  Sorry, Leo's, I don't miss ya!

8.  I learned that the Georgetown network is scary good.  Over Thanksgiving break, my mom suggested that I volunteer for a political campaign.  Within a week I was named Communications Director for DC/VA Students With Newt.  When my mom lived here, she volunteered for Reagan (I think?) so now even though we lived here decades apart, our DC experiences have something in common.  How cool is that?

9.  I learned that SweetGreen has a secret bacon drawer and they'll give you some if you ask.

10.  I learned that people will let me down.  It happens.  I don't trust as easily now as I did a few months ago.  I've seen people with strong values ignore those values because they think it'll raise their social status.  Hint:  It doesn't.

11.  I learned that people will lift me up.  They say you stop really making friends after freshman year, but even now I keep encountering awesome people.  People who will ask my how my day's going, and mean it.  I live with five really great girls and we support one another.

12.  I learned that my lucky number is 13.  I was supposed to graduate in 2013, but now I can graduate sooner.  The housemates and I were supposed to live in Henle 13, but all of us got pulled up into a newly-renovated Nevils.  The LaxBro's jersey number is 13.  December 13th is my last day of finals. TSwift likes 13s too, and she's my fave.  We had a puppy when I was growing up and he was born on 2/13.
