Throwback Post: Lunch with Uribe

This past November, I was one of the lucky eight CPS students who got to go to lunch with Fr. Carnes, Alvaro Uribe (former president of Colombia), and Uribe's two bodyguards.

We were all so nervous before he walked into the room.

I whispered to a friend, "Do I have lipstick on my teeth?" And everybody heard. And laughed. Oh well, no regrets :)

Then, Uribe walked in. The two bodyguards sat down directly to my right. One of them brought Uribe some cake. And when the group of us went over to the lecture hall for class, they stood one in front and one behind Uribe, speaking into their jackets.

Lesson about walking with a group that includes bodyguards: It makes you feel really cool. Way cooler, in fact, than you actually are.

Got into the lecture hall & nearly fell down the entire ramped aisle. Ramps + heels =super-ramp. Chatted with some friends before lecture started. The conversation went like this:

"Ooooh, you were at the lunch, how was it?"
"It was good! He was really candid with us- he's just this cute little man."
"Cute?"
"Well, yeah, this little guy, and he was so nice to all of us, and one of the bodyguards brought him cake-"
"-You know you're talking about a guy on the Human Rights Watch List, right?"
"Yeah...oh. Um..."

Lesson: Colombian drug wars, massive protests, and exile: not cute. Eating fries with seven fun classmates, a Jesuit, a former president, and two bodyguards? Pretty cute! Gotta love GU.

End scene :)
